Major Champions Gather for The ISPS Handa Global Cup

Irish three-time Major winner, Padraig Harrington and South African Charl Schwartzel headline the international field for the 2016 ISPS Handa Global Cup at Tokinodai Country Club, Japan, from 23 – 26 June.

One of golf’s most popular characters, Padraig Harrington, has won 30 titles worldwide including three Major Championships as well as playing in six Ryder Cups and will be making his first appearance in the championship. Joining him in the all-star line-up is South African Major Winner, Charl Schwartzel, who is currently ranked 22nd in the Official World Golf Rankings and finished T10 at last year’s inaugural event won by Japan’s Toshinori Muto.

Commenting on his first appearance in the tournament Harrington said, “The fantastic work that Dr Handa and ISPS carry out to inspire people through the power of sport is great to see. I am always keen to support worthy charitable causes and pleased to help raise awareness for blind and disabled golf, in their aim to become a Paralympic sport. There are few tournaments in the world where I get to make my debut having been a professional for more than 20 years, so I look forward to the experience and returning to play in Japan.”

Returning to the Championship, Charl Schwartzel said, “I played the inaugural event last year and really enjoyed my time in Japan. The ISPS Handa Global Cup is a fantastic event and the standard of golf was exceptional. I found it interesting to compete with the best local players and was pleased to post a top ten finish. Hopefully I’ll be able to finish a few places higher this year.”

Joining them at Tokinodai Country Club and completing the international line-up competing for a prize fund of Yen 100,000,000 will be Ryder Cup star and two-time European Tour winner, Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, and 23-year-old Argentinian Emilliano Grillo, who’s currently ranked 46 in the world rankings having claimed his maiden PGA TOUR title earlier this year.

Concluding on the strength of field, ISPS Chairman Dr Haruhisa Handa added, “We are delighted to welcome players from all corners of the world to this year’s ISPS Handa Global Cup in Japan. The event is extremely important for us to highlight our mission to inspire people through the power of sport and help shape the future. To have support from Padraig Harrington, Charl Schwartzel, Victor Dubuisson and Emilliano Grillo means a lot to us and we look forward to hosting them in Japan.”
